Subject: October 6, 2015 at 3:20 p.m. From: Ernst Meyer Date: Tue, 06 Oct 2015 15:25:43 -0400 To: Anne_Bingham , "McPhedran, Peter" , townsendfarm BCC: ernstmeyer@earthlink.net, Benjamin , Cyndy Behrman , Marion Namenwirth , "Meyer, Klemens" , Nathaniel , Niels Holger Nielsen , Bernd Strangfeld October 6, 2015 at 2:30 p.m. Margaret's condition remains substantially unchanged. She is now drinking between 16 and 32 oz. of whole milk each day. She has difficulty swallowing solid or semi-solid food and has been rejecting, except in very small amounts, regular offerings of yogurt, cottage cheese, thinly sliced ham and turkey. She has been sleeping only 14 to 16 hours a day, and less soundly. Her sleep is frequently punctuated by moans unrelated to any discernable physical pain. Except for occasionally moving her arms to touch her face, she continues to lie motionless in bed, all the while blissfully (and blessedly) unaware of her severe debility. Her skin continues to break down. In addition to the original decubitus ulcer over the sacrum and small ulcers on both buttocks there appeared small ulcers on her back and on her right ankle. The ulcers on the ankle developed within and inspite (or because of) fleece lined boots that she was wearing. So far as I can tell these lesions are not progressing and are healing, albeit slowly, under colloid dressings. Margaret's mental state seems to fluctuate. It's hard to estimate what she is or is not aware of. I make it a point not to quiz her. Given the severity of her dementia, she remains relatively eloquent. Recent exchanges include: MM: What is the nearest thoroughfare JM: School Street, 174 School Street. We are at 174 School Street. MM: Poor Jochen. JM: I am Jochen. MM: No where is Jochen. JM: I'm Jochen and I am right here. MM: Is there anyone else who cares? JM: Klemens, Laura, Benjamin, Nathaniel, Janet, Alex, and Peter care. JM: I love you. MM: I think it's nice and worth noting. MM: My head itches. (I scratched her scalp. She liked it and said:) That's very luxurious. MM: I think this bloodletting has gotten out of hand. MM (to JM): Are you forever identified with this address? MM (to JM): Have you laughed enough? MM: Are there any good jokes? MM: I'm going to get up. MM: But who are you? JM: I'm Jochen. MM: Nobody in the world knows who you are. JM: Do you want more to drink? MM: How would I know? It's a pretty strange world. I am impressed with the oracular quality of these statements as pure language, disjointed from both individual and communal experience. - They give me a new perspective about what went on at Delphi. Inasmuch as mental sanity is a social phenomenon, insanity entails a breakdown of society, and is correspondingly contagious. Please be forwarned: If and when any of you come to visit, you will encounter not one, but two crazies. q.e.d.
