Subject: October 13, 2015 (CB) From: Ernst Meyer Date: Tue, 13 Oct 2015 20:06:41 -0400 To: Cyndy Behrman Dear Cyndy, Thank you for your sympathy and for your advice. Margaret is unresponsive in a state of deep and probably irreversible unconsciousness. I've left the decision as to changing her up to Klemens, who would help me, if and when he decided it should be done. Margaret's breathing is very rapid (40 x per minute) and very shallow. When I talk to her, she remains mute and immobile. Her response when I kissed her about 8 hours ago, will be unforgettable. She didn't move, she said nothing, but a tear drop welled up at the inner canthus of the left lids, which were closed. Sic transit gloria mundi. Today is the 76th anniversary of the uncrating on Staten Island of the water-drenched household possessions that we had brought from Germany. 76 years ago tomorrow, we took the train south at Pennsylvania Station, and the following day, we arrived in Konnarock. It's been a long life with many blessings, of which far from the least is re-encountering you near the end of it. I hope your recovery from the hip fracture is satisfactory. My very best wishes! Jochen
