Few efforts are more impressive
and have more far-reaching consequences than 
our efforts to make true and meaningful statements
about issues of religion.

Religious experience is private, inward;
yet the individual whom it affects
feels constrained to demonstrate that experience,
or more precisely,
to establish a correlative of that experience
in the world of visible and tangible objects.
He proclaims:
"The heavens declare the glory of God,
and the firmament showeth his handiwork."

When such statements are phrased in generalities,
they are acceptable; they are tolerable.
when such statements become specific
they infringe on the religious sensitivities
of other person.

Ertraeglich wird das Goettliche nur,
wenn das Widergoettliche ihm entgegensteht.

prototypisch fuer die menschliche Mitteilung ueberhaupt.
