Nathaniels emergence in kindergarten as "peacemaker" corroborates my hypothesis that the character of children is formed by imitation of adults rather than by intimidation and coercion, especially with threats of violence. Nathaniel's behavior in school reflects our constant emphasis on the importance of making and maintaining peace, and that the preserving of peace is more important than the defining and asserting of ones rights. Even more important, it tends to confirm the wisdom of our policy of not hitting or spanking the children.
