In the historical appearances of prominent authors,
artists, philosophers, scientists, there is a remarkable
concatenation of circumstances, in that such individuals
must be remarkably competent and productive on the one
hand, and on the other, must be successfully promoted
either by themselves or by others. The work of someone who
labors in anonymity and isolation will never become known.
Indeed, if it were a choice between competence and
prominence, the latter would always carry the day, inasmuch
as even a semi-competent, - or an incompetent work may
become meaningful when readers or viewers or listeners
project their own experiences onto it.
