20080529.05 Preverbal memory is the intuitive experience that is the basis of our apprehension (knowledge) of time. Given this intuition, we construct from mementos, monuments, texts, chronicles, oral reports, as seamless a texture of events as we are able. Yet, as soon as we make its structure explicit, it falls apart, it disintegrates, into sometimes incongruous fragments. This disintegration reveals clefts and interstices which provide opportunities for new and different construction. The conventional seamless texture of time imposes unwarranted, unproductive, sometimes counterproductive restrictions on us and on our work. * * * * *
