A childhood friend of mine sent me a copy of John Updike's final volume of poems "Endpoint." He wants my help translating it into German. I've been practicing reading poetry. It hadn't previously occurred to me to consider, on the one hand, how the constraints of rhyme, rhythm and versification, especially in a poem as strictly structured as the sonnet, impinge on the poem's meaning. And on the other hand, how much that meaning is enhanced, enlarged and amplified, by the discipline required to express it in so strict a form. I conclude that I was insufficiently appreciative of your windows poem.
