Dear Cyndy,

The different tones of my letters to Nathaniel and Benjamin reflect
the circumstance that to Nathaniel I can quote Rilke, Hoelderlin, Goethe,
Schiller, Heine, Kleist ... to Benjamin not yet.

Rebekahs's essay suggests to me that she also has arrived, albeit
by a different route. Like yourself I had not looked at the Brothers
Karamasov for sixty years. Last night I reread the account of the Grand
Inquisitor, then started to read chapter 1. I could spend the rest of my
life in Dostoevskis world, but then I wouldn't have a chance to tell my
own story.

I showed your letter to Katenus. He liked it, and he said some very
nice things about you which I'm embarrassed to repeat.

Klemens sent me a URL for as very good  YouTube performance of
Bach's Kaffeekantate, which you might enjoy. If I've forwarded it
previously, I apologize.
