A Modest Proposal In the context of our recent conversations, I make a proposal: Listen to J.S. Bach Cantata #51 www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFDtRn396WY www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lhju4Ad_LBs www.youtube.com/watch?v=tP909hFOPAk www.youtube.com/watch?v=TBcCGb5A6d4 violin: www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtPCDL41Dyk Look at the score of Cantata #51 http://imslp.org/wiki/Jauchzet_Gott_in_allen_Landen,_BWV_51_%28Bach,_Johann_Sebastian%29 Remind yourself that Bach learned about music in part by adapting works of Vivaldi for instrumental and organ composition of his own. Listen to and look at the soprano part of Cantata 51 and tell me what changes would be required to perform the soprano notes on the trumpet. All three arias are impressive to me. The recitatives might be dropped. Imagine a Concerto for Two Trumpets after J.S. Bach by Nathaniel Meyer. It would require in addition to the trumpets only four violins, two violas and a cello or two. Consider a world premiere of the Concerto for Two Trumpets at the Beech Street Center. P.S. For survivors with a sense of humor and irony, it might be the most wonderful funeral music ever composed.
