Dear Mr. Esposito, Thank you for your thoughtful comments on the dispute between the Nantucket Building Department, the Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gasfitters and myself. I welcome your efforts to mediate this dispute, but it seems very important to me that you should be paid for your work. Permit me respectfully to say that while I do not wish to assume financial responsibility for such mediation, I have no objection to your accepting payment from the Town of Nantucket for your efforts. It may be helpful to you if I explain that from my perspective, this is not an issue of plumbingcode-compliance, but rather of the Town's refusal - or inability - to accept the rule of law. I believe that the Town is persecuting me, not because, as the Nazis said, I am a Half-Jew (Halbjude), not even because I am an "off-islander", but because by "going to court" I challenge the authority of local officials. It is because of the very fundamental nature of our disagreement about government by law, i.e. constitutional government, that I believe the dispute is impermeable to compromise. But I have no objection to your trying, and, as always, I thank you for your help. Sincerely yours, Ernst Meyer
