Dear Nathaniel, Last night I was up until 1:30 a.m. watching and listening to the 2011 LaScala performance of Don Giovanni under Barenboim. I found not only the opera but also the cinematophotography very impressive, and this morning I thought of you and the opportunities and challenges of video-recording operas, especially those rarely performed and never before documented. If you perfected your technique you could take your cameras all over the country and all over the world to places such as music schools which ventured to perform "unknown" operas - perhaps by Salieri or Soler and by compiling a video catalogue of such works, you could establish your own place in the musical world, - that's just a thought. My own writing has become alarmingly profuse. With 163 sonnets, I've outshakespeared Shakespeare by nine poems, with possibly more on the way. Sometime when you have nothing better to do, take a look at the en.wikipedia entry for Lorenzo DaPonte, Jew, Catholic priest, banished libertine and Pennsylvania grocer whose role model was Don Giovanni himself. Broadening your view of the world is always a good thing. Love, Jochen
