Here's my answer to your confusion between theory and reality.
It's a translated excerpt of chapter 9 of the novel on
which I'm working.

"Von allen Vorstellungen mit denen ich mich beschäftige
ist das Denken möglicherweise die geheimnisvollste.
Of all the notions that pre-occupy me, 
thought itself is perhaps the most mysterious.
 
Im Vergleich, zum Beispiel, betreffs des Sehens
lade ich dich zur Wahrnehmung eines Bildes ein;
In comparison, for example, concerning vision,
I would invite you to look at a picture with me.

dich betreffs des Hörens zu belehren würde ich dir ein Lied vorsingen;
to instruct you about hearing, I would sing you a song.

betreffs des Trinkens, dir ein Glas Piesporter eingießen.
with regard to drinking, I would pour you a glass of wine.

Aber von meinem Denken, obgleich ich von allem das ich erlebe,
vom Denken das Äußerste wissen sollte, ergibt es sich als unmöglich
euch von meinem Denken mitzuteilen.
But concerning my thinking, although of everything I experience
about thinking I should know the most, I find it impossible
to communicate to you what my thinking is. 

Ich habe jahrelang den Gedanken genährt,
wohl weil ich so einsam war,
das Denken sei nichts als ein fortwährendes lautloses Sprechen mit mir selbst;
auch meinte ich die Sprache sei das unentbehrliche Gerüst
geistig-seelischer Tätigkeit.

For many years I nourished the thought,
perhaps on account of my solitude,
that thinking was nothing but continuing silent conversation with myself;
then too I thought speech to be the indispensable framework
of intellectual and spiritual activity.

Jetzt sehe ich ein, dass ich mich in einem folgereichen Irrtum befand.
Now I understand that I was victim of a consequential error.

Denn heute meine ich einzusehen in wie vielen Dimensionen meine Erleben
von der Sprache unabhängig ist.
For today I am aware in how many dimensions my experience and my understanding
are independent of language.

Allein die so oft beteuerten Tatsachen, dass das Erleben 'unsagbar' ist,

dass 'was geschieht' 'einen solchen Vorsprung vor unserm Meinen' hat,

Zur dialektischen Widerlegung zitiere ich die so offensichtlich
brüchige und hinfällige Behauptung der logischen Positivisten,
nur das sei wirklich was sich eindeutig aussprechen lässt,
eine schale unsinnige Vereinfachung unserer geistigen Existenz,
welche so manches was das Leben sinnvoll und erträglich macht,
die Dichtung, die Musik, so wie die abbildenden Künste in den Abfalleimer wirft.

In dialectical opposition, I cite the so obviously
faulty and futile argument of logical positivists
that real is exclusively what lends iself to precise verbal expression,
a shallow non-sensical simplification of our spirutual existence
which trashes so much that makes life meaningful and bearable,
such as poetry, music, and representational art.
