My unusual discontent with the contemporary political scene can not reasonably be attributed to current events, - for the country is no different from the way it has been for the 79 years that I have lived here, - but rather to the circumstance that in the past two years it has become more difficult for me to deceive myself about the people among which I am living. Obama's lies were believable because of his style; Trump's style is more truthful and displays his mendacity. The circumstance that Trump cannot control himself, that he runs off both at the mouth and on the keyboard invests his pronouncements with a brutal honesty which makes (self)deception much more difficult. One cannot be both honest and successful in politics. An honest politician (or statesman) is a contradiction in terms.
