Dear Alex,

Thank you very much for our telephone conversation, which was, as always, very satisfying to me.

I am writing to ask you to consider whether you would like to cooperate with me in a project to catalogue, decipher, interpret and annotate the numerous family letters which were collected and preserved by your grandmother and passed from her to your mother, from your mother to Janet, from Janet to Margaret, and from Margaret to me. I would like this literary heritage, which has been conscientiously and affectionately preserved not to be lost.  I propose to begin by scanning the numerous letters into PDF files. I should be pleased to provide copies of these files on CD's to yourself and to all other interested family members each of whom might make comments and annotations to be included in the collection. The original documents would, of course, also be available.
