Dear Donald,
Thank you for your letter. It is good that so far as issues of health are concerned, you are holding your own. I'm not sure that I should say the same for myself.

Reinhold did not respond to my request that he edit any translation I might provide. When I had asked Reinhold about a year ago to send me the pictures so that I could translate the captions, he declined with the explanation that it was something he would take care of. I inferred that he intended to manage the publication of the book himself.

I translate from Reinholds letter to me of February 7, 2022: 

"Now to the translation. I have sent Donald many texts wich were originally composed in  English. I no longer find them in my computer. I suppose he still has them. I estimate about a third of the book. The longest is from Margaret Smith, nee Rosenthal, a cousin of your fathers." 

(Nun zu der Übersetzung. Ich habe Donald viele Texte geschickt, die im Original auf Englisch verfaßt wurden. Ich finde sie nicht mehr in meinem PC, er hat sie aber wohl noch. Ich schätze, etwa ein Drittel des Buches. Der längste ist von Margot Smith geb. Rosenthal, der Kusine Deines Vaters.) 

The impressum page of my copy of Verstreut über alle fünf Kontinente indicates 
a)that Reinhold Busch holds the copyright to his book. 

b) that the publication of any translation would require not only Reinhold's consent but also that of the publisher, tredition Gmbh, Halenreie 40-44, Hamburg, Germany. 

c) that he hired a professional editor, Angelika Fleckenberg of the small firm Spotsrock, Postfach 11 23, Troisdorf, 53821, Germany to design the layout, cover and the arrangement of pictures, (layout Bildbearbeitung u. Umschlaggestaltung).  The website of Spotsrock (http://www.spotsrock.de/) responds with error code 403 Forbidden.

My respectful suggestions to you are as follow:

1) that you decide whether you wish to assume the multiple responsibilities for the publication of an English version of Verstreut über alle fünf Kontinente, and 

2) if you do wish to assume the multiple responsibilities for the publication of an English version of Verstreut über alle fünf Kontinente, that you then

2a) obtain Reinhold's permission to publish a translation,

2b) obtain the permission of tredition, Gmbh to publish a translation,

2c) that you try to obtain from Reinhold, from Angelika Fleckenberg, or from  tredition Gmbh, a copy of the editable computer file (.odt, .doc, .docx, .rtf) which had been ultimately prepared by Angelika Fleckenberg for her own use and/or submitted for publication to tredition, Gmbh.  (.pdf files are, in general, not editable without special purchase of expensive software from Adobe.

2d) that you edit the attached file "Rosenthal_Family_20220301.odt", making any changes that you deem desirable, and shortening the extensive account of my father's family as you think best. If you cannot open .odt files, please advise me what format (.doc .docx .rtf .txt) you prefer. 

2e) that you forward to me as an e-mail attachment the files specified above in 2c) and as edited by you the file specified in 2d) 

2f) that you forward to me copies of all contributions to "Verstreut über alle fünf Kontinente", which were originally in English.  

2g) that you forward to me all pictures in "Verstreut über alle fünf Kontinente" which pictures are not included in the file specified in 2c)
