I have been thinking about eye movements, in the experimental study of which I was involved for about 6 months in a joint project of MIT and Mass. Eye and Ear Infirmary. In retrospect I now consider that project to have been fraudulent, frivolous and scurrilous. However, even today I remember some of the phenomena I learned about eye movements. The anatomic location and the functional focus of human vision is the retinal fovea, which is a circumscribed locality of the central retina which has a high concentration of sensory cells (cones, Netzhautkegel, Netzhautstab) momentum-location motion-place time-space The fovea is the only spot (section, portion, location) of the retina capable of imaging a pattern of small, closely spaced structures. The peripheral, virtually spherical retina serves as a hemispheric scanning device which merely ascertains the existence of objects and stimulates the rotation or repositioning of the eye so that the object of interest falls on the fovea.
