February 2, 2023 Dear Carolyn, dear Ed, Thank you very much for your help with the Internet-telephone problem. Unfortunately it's still not working. But this is not an emergency, and I ask that you not inconvenience yourselves to help me fix it. At some time that is convenient, a) Please go into the Kitchen, pick up the phone and listen whether or not you hear a dial tone. b) Then, whether you hear a dial tone or not, please disconnect the kitchen telephone from the wall-outlet. c) Go into my father's study, where there is on the desk a telephone. If this telephone is connected, please disconnect it from the wall. d) Go onto the porch. There is a telephone line plugged into an outlet at the right side of a post between two windows. This telephone line extends to the computer modem. Please check whether there is also a telephone on the porch. Please do not change any telephone connections on the porch. e) When you are on the porch, please pull out the electric extention cord from the electric outlet on the post between the two windows. == Then wait sixty seconds. == After sixty seconds plug the extension cord back into the same outlet from which you just removed it. This temporary disconnection will recycle the modem, and might solve our problem, if we are lucky. f) Thank you very much for your help. Please feel free to telephone at any time, but keep in mind that I am very slow, and if I am not at the phone when it rings, the call will be cut off before I can pick it up. In that case, I will call you right back. g) Thank you again. With best wishes for both of you, Jochen
