October 29, 2023 Dear Nathaniel, Earlier this afternoon, before you sent me your Lobkowicz e-mails, Nikola Chubrich telephoned me, and I entertained him with an account of your Kafkaeske encounter with Dr. Petr Slouka, Curator of the Lobkowicz Music Archive at Nelahozeves. Nikola, who told me that he had recently been depressed, mentioned that he had met a Lobkowicz descendant at Milton Academy and that he, Nikola, had many years ago visited a Lobkowicz castle in Chechia, I believe with his parents. I find the articles about William Lobkowicz to which you sent me the URLs very persuasive, and I conclude that capitalism, that money, is the key to liberating the numerous musical manuscripts, including those of Carterielli held hostage at Nelahozeves. The threshold issue is whether you consider it worth your while to involve yourself, perhaps even to spearhead an enterprise - business or more likely non-profit - to arrange for the copying, digitalizing printing and publishing all the musical manuscripts obtainable from Nelahozeves. Probably seed money would have to be obtained from private benefactors. Hypothetical benefits to you personally would be a) that you would get the scores and the parts you want, b) that by involving others, e.g. Kathryn Libin, Martin Pearlman, Petr Slouka, the Dante Aleghieri Society, ... etc. your professional profile would be raised, and c) you would be entitled to reasonable compensation for your efforts. If you're interested, we should talk about it; if not, I don't want to take your time with my ideas. Thank you for all the food.
