20000805.03 An alternate, but cognate, interpretation of the symbolic forms, is that they represent the adaptation of mind to its environment; or more specifically, the specific adaptation of mind to (grouped) environmental stimuli. This adaptation consists in the generation of a symbol. Whether this symbol is function or whether it is structure, is a separate issue. This interpretation is consistent with the tradition that like is only known by like, Gleiches wird nur von Gleichem erkannt, a tradition which finds its preliminary corroboration in phenomena of resonance. Ultimately however, the issue whether the generation of symbolic forms is an expression of adaptation or of stimulation is of nothing more than semantic significance. * * * * *
