     The recursive process at one and the same time defines and
refines subjective knowledge. Purportedly objective knowledge can
be grasped or appropriated only as subjective, and successive
subjective recursions clarify this relationship. Similarly
subjective intent must become objective in order to be
meaningful, successive (objective) recursions clarify this
relationship also.

     What is the recursive function which is invoked? It is most
felicitously designated, I think, as understanding. One must
understand not only that one understands, but one must understand
also what one has understood.  Thus there develops an
understanding of a higher order, which in turn requires to be
understood.

     Man muss nicht nur verstehen, dass man versteht, sondern man
muss das Verstandene verstehen: so ergibt sich ein Verstandenes
hoeheren Ranges, welches wiederum verstanden sein will.  So wird
neben der sinnlichen Wahrnehmung das Denken zu einer Bruecke zur
sachlichen, objektiven Aussenwelt.

     The recursion which operates on the primitive understanding,
(I am not sure that referring to it as sensation or perception is
appropriate,) has as its consequence both a subjective and an
objective understanding of a higher order. As the layers of
recursion increase, scientific data in their objectivity and
metascientific experience in their subjectivity may be said to
become purified, or concentrated.
