     Courant (What is Mathematics) schreibt , der prototypische
Punkt sei ein kleiner Fleck, wie von einem Bleistift.  Ich
hingegen meine, der Punkt ist die Deutung des kaum noch, des fast
nicht mehr Sichtbarseins eines Gegenstandes, die Linie ist das
ineinander schmilzen der kaum noch erkannten Punkte, die Deutung
der Grenze.  Die Flaeche ist das Ergebnis der Fusion der Punkte,
die Verwischung der Einzelheiten, der Details.

     Das Auge hebt die Diskontinuitaeten auf.  The eye smoothes
the curve, flattens the plane; staightness is the consequence of
fusion, the consequence of the suppression of discontinuity.
Just as the interia of the ear fuses, smoothes the vibrations
into the note, so the inertia of the eye fuses points into a
line, lumps, Haeufchen into a plane.  Straightness is the
projection of the fused object.  (These are all preliminary
reductions which require to be corrected and refined.)

     The object, der Gegenstand, das Ding ist was einen Namen
hat, ist das Benannte, ist das sprachlich bezeichnete.

     Punkt Linie Gerade Flaeche Ebene.

     It would be appropriate to refer to thse considerations as
the psychological basis of mathematics if only the term
psychology were not incumbered with so much nonsense.

     The Gestalt theorists have shown that motion is  an
inference from the successive apperception of the same object in
different locations. In order for motion to be perceived, the
interval between image recognition is essential.  Too short,
there is blurring; too long, there are two stationary objects
perceived.  This observation go a long way to resolving the
paradox(es) of Zeno.

     Time is the consciousness, awareness of successive memories,
and memories are like the afterimages of thought.  Thus there is
an innate awareness of time, i.e. the flow of time, just as there
is an innate awareness of space.

     Gestalt theory may be interpreted as psychological
relativity also in Riemannian space.

     The trouble with the Riemannian 4 dimensional space, of
which time is a component, might be that in it, time is
underweighted, that actually time has the same weight as the
three Euclidian components together.

     It is the characteristic of mathematics that it deprives
objects (Dinge) of their names, hence of their intuitive content
and substitutes symbols.  The symbol is susceptible to
(mathematical) operation in a manner in which the primary object
is not.  This is the case with algebra, even more so, with set
theory.  The empty (vacant) concepts of mathematics are devoid
of, are no longer burdened with content.  Die leeren Begriffe der
Mathematik sind nunmehr mit keinem Inhalt belastet.

     Logic is mathematics in so far as it too abstracts from the
intuitive fullness of experience.  Such abstraction permits,
facilitates, makes possible thinking about thought: makes thought
the object of thinking.  Thus mathematical thought is inherently
recursive.  Mathematik als denken ueber das Denken, also die
wahre Philosophie.  Und insofern als das Menschsein die
Rekursivitaet des Denkens, bezw Fuehlens ist, ist die Mathematik
die wesentliche Taetigkeit des Menschen.  Wenn sie es waere,
sollte sie zu zu seiner Seligkeit fuehren.

     Zusammenfassend: die mathematischen Gestalten haben ihre
Vorlagen in der Wahrnehmung und im Denken.  Im Falle des Punktes
und der Linie sind diese Vorlagen augenscheinlich.  Im Falle der
Geraden, der Flaeche, der Zahl und der Menge sind diese Vorlagen
schwieriger ersichtlich; und doch muss man  annehmen dass sie
bestehen, selbst wenn sie letzten Endes nicht auffindbar, nicht
demonstrabel waeren.
