     When I contemplate the festivals and celebrations which
punctuate this time of year, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Thomas
Mann's Tonio Kroeger comes to mind, ahe has returned to his
hometown, and chanced to visit a dance, not as a participant,
but as an observer, literally and figuratively an outsider
who observes the scene, and notices a frail, awkward woman,
trying to dance and then stumbling, and falling down onto the
dance floor.  At that moment the protagonist intervenes,
helps the woman, whom he recognizes as the sweetheart of his
youth, to her feet, and with the gentle admonition, "You
really should dance any more," goes on his way.  I haven't
read Tonio Kroeger for years.  I wonder if it is only my
fantasy which I am describing.

     Betreffs all der Feiern um diese Jahreszeit,
Thanksgiving, Weihnachten, besinne ich mich auf Tonio
Kroeger, und die Gesellschaftsszene, wo der gereifte Mann, in
seine Vaterstadt zurueckgekehrt, als bildlich und woertlich
aussenstehender, die Jugendfreundin hinter den Glasscheiben
im Tanzsaal erblickt, und der Gestuerzten mit einem "Sie
sollten nicht mehr tanzen."  auf die Beine hilft.  Oder
beschreibt die Szene lediglich meine Phantasie.  Ich habe
"Tonio Kroeger" seit Jahren nicht mehr gelesen.
