The function of (philosophical) thought is not the
discovery of new truths, nor the invention of new thinking
devices. The function of philosophical thought is an
exercise in vision, in understanding: to inculcate the
ability to accept experience as it is. In the process of
flourishing and surviving in this world, experience has
become encrusted with diverse ancillary assumptions. To free
us from these assumptions, is an important, perhaps the most
important function of thought.
