It is a misunderstanding, it is a mistake, to demand or
even to expect that the intimacy or closeness of human
relationships should be progressive. We find, we hit upon
something, upon an object, an individual, a relationship that
pleases, and naturally we demand more, more, more. But more
is better only to a certain point, and beyond that point,
more is worse. The optimum is not in quantity or intensity
or temporal extent. Rather the optimum is in quality, in
symmetry, in harmony, in edification, in productivity. The
optimum is the expression of an esthetic, an ethical and
perhaps ultimately an economic function in the broadest and
deepest meaning of that term.
