It seems to me that inherent subjectivity is the
distinguishing feature of all sexuality. It is this
subjectivity which determines the privacy with which all
subjectivity is invested, and explains the circumstance that
sexual experience publically displayed is inherently
offensive or obscene. The privacy of sexual experience also
accounts for the unsatisfactoriness of conceptual
explanations, accounts, more generally for our pervasive
ignorance of the subject. Knowledge is derived from and is
corrected by observation of the world. The sexual experience
to which I can be witness, however, is essentially only my
own. Hence the presumption to describe a general (universal)
sexual experience unavoidably fails.
