20061128.02 I have always been wary of mystery stories. When I try to articulate my aversion, I rationalize that life itself is inherently mysterious, and that the writer of mystery stories seduces the reader to believe that our experiences are or should be clear and intelligible. The mystery story is a contrivance which is significant only on the assumption that life itself is devoid of mystery, and that the mystery of life is a scheme that can be imposed on it. * * * * *
