Thanks very much for your mail--I am temporarily switching back to English
to speed composition.  I'd be delighted to go over my email (the longest
piece I have written in German since college), and am glad that my mistakes
are not glaring.

I must concede that there are absolute claims in the New Testament, and I
am probably in danger of overlooking those or denying the existence of
those claims.  *My* personal heresy is probably universalism.  But, having
been involved in the charismatic and evangelical movements in college, I am
in reaction very much against any coercion toward faith.  You and I do have
different standpoints vis a vis the church, which is perhaps a function of
our different experiences.  This does not disturb me in the least.

I am sorry that overseeing the construction is proving to be so
demanding--we found it to be so when we had our windows replaced in our
apartment three years ago.  I hope that all turns out well--I'm sure it
will!  I completely understand the time demands that this oversight makes,
and appreciate any correspondence that you can undertake.

Let us think about undertaking some kind of common study--maybe we could
meet approximately once a month, and either read Barth or Bonhoeffer in
German, or possibly translate the New Testament, or some patristic text
(more difficult), if you had time and were interested.  I think it would be
highly enjoyable.  I would not want to impose this or myself on you in any
way.  But such a study would be a way for me to keep a lmy studies alive a
little, which I have neglected over the years, perhaps on account of
personal, church, career-related (beruflich) involvements, which do, of
course, continue, as they do for all of us.

In any case, all the best, and please write back when you have time and

Ihr Vorschlag zu einem gemeinsamen Studium gefaellt mir.
Es gibt eine so grosze Anzahl lesenswerter Buecher, dasz
wir keine Schwierigkeit haben sollten etwas auszusuchen,
das uns beiden der Muehe wert erscheint. Das Urchristentum
ist mir ein Thema von groszem Interesse, so wie auch die
Kirchenvaeter: Ich habe nie Gelegenheit gehabt mich damit
zu befassen. Auch ueber die Philosophie und Theologie des
Mittelalters moechte ich mehr wissen, wie etwa ueber Nikolaus
von Cusa, Maimonides, die Reformatoren, Zwingli, Calvin,
Luther. In diesen Sachen bin ich unersaettlich, und bereit
alles zu probieren.

Auch sollten wir die Moeglichkeit einer schriftlichen
Auseinandersetzung ueber ein gewaehltes Thema nicht vergessen.
Das ergaebe, stilistisch, ein Gespraech, eine Dialog; und ich
kann mir vorstellen, dasz wenn wir mutig sind und die Muehe
nicht scheuen, etwas recht gutes dabei heraus kommen koennte.

Selbstverstaendlich waeren regelmaeszigen Zusammenkuenfte
wuenschenswert. Wir sollten aber auch nicht vergessen,
dasz, abgesehen von e-mail sorgfaeltig vorbereitete Telephon-
gespraeche sehr ergiebig sein koennten. Auch interssiert mich
die Machbarkeit (feasibility) von regelmaeszigem
"Videoconferencing" per Internet. Haben Sie dergleichen
Versuche je in Erwaegung gezogen?
