I contemplate a tri-partite division (Einteilung) of
thought: a man's relationships: a) to himself and his god, b)
to other human beings, and c) to reality or nature. Each of
these divisions may be considered from the point of view: 1)
of actuality, and 2) of ideality. i.e. one may consider ones
experiences as they are or one one may consider them as one
would like them to be, as they "should" be. Experiences may
also be considered as functional or as dysfunctional, to the
extent that they satisfy the needs of the individual or leave
him dissatisfied.
Idealization has an important function in orienting an
individual's action to some purpose or in some direction.
Ideals are expressions of needs and desires, in whose absence
actions would be random and arbitrary.
