The ultimate success of the social agent as actor, as
the fusion of the public persona and the private
consciousness is the merging of the public and private
identity. The public role then become the defining pattern
of the individuals life. The public appearance whether as
president or as professor becomes the fulfillment of highly
subjective desires, dreams, aspirations. But in fulfilling
these aspirations, success also destroys them.
It is in this light that I interpret Properos
Epilogue, Let your indulgence set me free ... Free from the
actor's duty to represent someone who he is not.
Arguably, and very plausibly so, this analysis is an
expression of resentment, a sophisticated version of sour
grapes.
Or perhaps the ultimate, the real achievement is the
trapeze act of balancing the contradicting forces on the
high wire of existence.
